Befeker Assefa, Bethesda, MD—The Bethesda community is deeply saddened by the recent passing of Befeker Assefa, who lost his battle with recurring Ewing Sarcoma on August 18th. Befeker was just 21 years old and was a cherished son, brother, and friend to many. He was known for his kind and spirited nature, living up to the meaning of his name, "By Love."
Befeker was a promising student in his third year of studying Statistics and Machine Learning at Carnegie Mellon University. He was also a member of the Tartans Scholars honors society, where he was admired for his academic achievements and warm personality. His untimely passing has left a significant void in the lives of those who knew him.
In light of this loss, a fundraiser has been organized by Yonatan Tesemma to support Befeker’s family during this difficult time. As of today, $450 has been raised out of the $25,000 goal, with donations from friends and community members, including Patrick Bayard, Ellen Suryadi, and an anonymous contributor.
The fundraiser aims to alleviate the financial burdens associated with Befeker’s illness and help the family navigate the challenging days ahead. The community is encouraged to continue supporting the family, and any contribution, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated.
Befeker’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, and his spirit will continue to inspire everyone who was fortunate enough to cross paths with him.
We extend our deepest condolences to Befeker Assefa’s family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
