Barbara Jean McFarlane, known fondly as Jean, left us to join heaven’s rodeo on September 16, 2024. A cherished figure in the Melbourne, ON community, Jean’s passing has left a profound sense of loss among family, friends, and the countless lives she touched.
Born and raised on her family farm as the second daughter of Jack and Betty Fletcher, Jean developed a lifelong passion for animals. This love was nurtured alongside her siblings, Judith Chamberlain, Gus Fletcher, and Scottie Fletcher, on their farm where she honed her skills in raising and training racehorses. Her dedication to animal care led her to Centralia College’s Animal Health Technician program in 1972, where she formed enduring friendships with the Centralia Sisters. Jean’s career as a veterinary technician and later as a Provincial Meat Inspector spanned decades, reflecting her commitment to animal welfare and the agricultural community.
Jean was not only devoted to her profession but also to her family and community. She met her first love, Don “Gump” McFarlane, through Junior Farmers in her late teens, and they were married in 1979. Together, they raised their children, JD, Jennifer, and Michael, in a home filled with love and shared passions. Jean was a loving grandmother, affectionately known as Nana, to Taylor, Tenley, Madelyn, and the newest addition to the family, baby Dawn.
Her passing has left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Jean’s spirit, kindness, and dedication to the western lifestyle will be remembered through the newly established Jean McFarlane Memorial Scholarship for Cowgirls and Cowboys. Organized by JD and Mike McFarlane, the scholarship aims to support young cowgirls and cowboys in achieving their dreams. The fundraiser has already seen support, with $200 raised towards its $5,000 goal from early donors including Brad Garlough, Devon Macneil, and Christine Jolley.
Jean’s legacy is one of love, community, and an unwavering spirit. The Melbourne community, her family, and friends will continue to cherish her memory, keeping her legacy alive in the hearts of many.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the McFarlane family during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
