Anu Okusanya, a resident of Newry, tragically passed away after a heartbreaking incident that has left the community in shock. Anu had been living in Newry for 15 months, and her sudden passing has caused an outpouring of grief and support for her family, particularly her son, Olaitan, who was due to arrive in Newry on September 12 to start a new life with his mother.
Anu’s passing occurred following an attempt to raise the alarm after she witnessed a gang, who had attacked her twice before, beating someone on her usual route home in Damolly Village on Wednesday, August 24. She ran to a friend’s house to get help, but tragically collapsed upon arrival and passed away the following Sunday.
A fundraiser has been organized by the Newry Reporter to assist with funeral costs, including a gravestone for Anu. The remaining funds will help give Olaitan the best possible start to his new life in Newry. So far, £420 has been raised out of a £1,000 target, with donations pouring in from the community.
Many in the community have expressed their sorrow on social media. Pauline Counsell wrote, "Absolutely heart breaking," while Shivvy MacAoidh shared, "Very sad and horrific, that a gang of thugs are terrorising honest, hard-working people who live in this area!" Jackie McBennett also commented, "Disgusting shameful behaviour! This poor woman."
As the community mourns this devastating loss, we extend our deepest condolences to Anu’s family. May she rest in peace, and may her loved ones find strength and comfort during this incredibly difficult time.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Anu’s family, especially Olaitan, as they navigate this tragic period.
