Andrew Richards, Phnom Penh— Andrew Richards, a proud Vietnam War veteran, passed away on December 13, 2024, in his Phnom Penh apartment. Known as "Andy," he was originally from Wisconsin and served as a Field Artilleryman in the 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War, earning a Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge. His service was a source of pride, though his views on the war were complex.
Andy moved to Cambodia in 2002, after spending time in various parts of the United States, including Wisconsin and the West Coast. He was a life member of the Mayaguez Memorial VFW Post 11575 and lived a modest life in Cambodia. Due to a series of medical issues beginning in 2021, Andy’s financial situation became strained, and he passed without the means for a proper funeral.
A fundraiser has been organized by Roy Day to assist with Andy’s final arrangements, including cremation costs and a Buddhist funeral ceremony in Phnom Penh. Donations are also being collected for a token of appreciation to his girlfriend, who cared for him during his final years, particularly in his last six months. As of now, $1,590 has been raised through the generosity of friends and the community.
Though Andy would have been uncomfortable with the public nature of the fundraiser, those who knew him have come together to support his final journey. His life and service will be remembered, and his loved ones will carry on his legacy.
We offer our deepest condolences to his family and friends during this sorrowful time. May he rest in peace.
