Andrea Mychaels, Haddonfield, NJ — The community is deeply mourning the loss of Andrea Mychaels, who passed away on January 16, 2024. Andrea was a renowned dance educator, choreographer, and mentor, known for her incredible talent, fierce dedication, and the profound impact she had on her students and colleagues.
Andrea’s passing followed a difficult battle with Bechet’s Disease, a rare autoimmune condition. During her hospitalization, she contracted a bacterial infection that her weakened body could not overcome, leading to her untimely death. Andrea was 45 years old.
In honor of Andrea’s legacy, her family has established the Andrea Mychaels Performing Arts Foundation (AMPAF). This foundation aims to provide scholarships and financial support to performing arts students, ensuring Andrea’s passion for the arts continues to inspire and support future generations. A fundraiser organized by Nicole Frost has so far raised $425 out of a $7,000 goal, with contributions from supporters like John Martorana, Paul Morgan, and Frank Annunziata.
The outpouring of love and condolences from the community has been overwhelming. On Facebook, many have shared their heartfelt messages, reflecting on the profound impact Andrea had on their lives:
“Badass. Rockstar. Powerhouse. Legendary. The inventor of tough love. I could go on and on about Miss Andrea, but the list would go on forever simply because she’s everything. I think anyone who ever had the pleasure of taking her classes, chatting with her, or even just watching (or hearing from across the studio lol) her classes can agree. I’m sure all of us will hear her coaching us through life no matter what it may be,” said Jessica E.
“Your sister was a LEGEND amongst the MFAs at Texas Woman’s University. During my years there, I heard stories about what a force she was from a friend who’d taken her classes and danced in her pieces as an undergrad. Those stories got me through some very challenging times during which I had to defend myself and my creative choices as if my life and my sanity depended on it. Her spirit is still rocking DGL in Denton. Her name still makes some people quake in their boots,” shared Barbara A.
Andrea’s students and colleagues also expressed their admiration and gratitude:
“You shaped who I am not only as a dancer, but as a person. You introduced me to some of my best friends and people in my life that I know will be a part of it for a very long time. You pushed me outside of my comfort zone – literally choreographing me in a left heel stretch when I didn’t even have the flexibility to do a right split! But I figured it out. You knew I would. You believed in me. You impacted my life so greatly, and I know I’m not the only one. The mark you left on this world and the people in it will never be forgotten, so thank you,” wrote Brett.
Andrea’s memory will live on through the love and passion she instilled in her students, and the AMPAF will continue to honor her dedication to the arts.
