Alice Haspray, a deeply respected figure within the Zen and Shambhala communities, passed away on Tuesday, August 20th, at 5:45 pm. Alice, who resided with her husband Richard on the serene two-acre property in St Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia, was known for her profound wisdom, dedication to teaching, and her love for the Japanese way of tea.
Alice’s journey with Zen Buddhism began during her college years in Minnesota, where she first encountered the practice of zazen. Her spiritual path led her to the San Francisco Zen Center in 1970, where she met influential teachers such as Suzuki Roshi and Trungpa Rinpoche. Following Suzuki Roshi’s passing in 1971, Alice and Richard continued their spiritual training at Tassajara, eventually moving to the Rocky Mountain Dharma Center (RMDC) in Colorado as instructed by Rinpoche.
Alice’s contributions to the community were vast and far-reaching. She was instrumental in teaching and spreading the Shambhala teachings across North America, Chile, Brazil, and Spain. Her dedication to the Shambhala path was recognized when Sakyong Mipham appointed her as a shastri in 2010, a role she held until her retirement in 2019. Even after her formal retirement, Alice continued to teach and guide others, embodying the essence of the Zen practice in every aspect of her life.
In honor of her memory, her son Noah Haspray has organized a fundraiser titled "Support Alice Haspray’s Legacy of Wisdom and Love." The goal is to raise $8,000, but as of now, no donations have been made. The funds will support the preservation of Alice’s teachings and the continuation of her legacy.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Haspray family. Our thoughts and prayers are with Richard, Noah, and their entire family during this difficult time.
