Claudia Balmaseda Orellanes Tragically Dies in Fatal Biscayne Bay Boating Accident
Claudia Balmaseda Orellanes, a 33-year-old from Coral Gables, tragically lost her life on Saturday, March 28, 2026, after a fatal boating accident in Biscayne Bay, near Nixon Sandbar.
Claudia was thrown from a 27-foot boat along with her passenger, 54-year-old Neil Schwab of Coconut Grove. Unfortunately, Claudia was struck by the vessel as it spun out of control and was later recovered by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units from the water. Despite their efforts, Claudia could not be saved.
Neil Schwab, who was also thrown from the boat, survived and was hospitalized. Authorities from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are investigating the incident, which remains under active examination.
Witnesses reported seeing the boat circling in the bay, unmanned, and a Jet Ski rider later located the two individuals. The loss of Claudia has deeply affected her family, friends, and the community.
