Cameron Mertens of Watkins Remembered After June 1, 2026 Drowning During Solo Fishing Trip on Pleasant Lake in Corinna Township

The Watkins community mourns Cameron Mertens, 18, after a drowning on Pleasant Lake in Corinna Township on Monday evening, June 1, 2026.

Authorities said responders were called around 8:18 p.m. to the lake’s north-side public access and dock area after witnesses reported a possible drowning and deputies found an overturned kayak near shore.

Investigators said Cameron had been fishing alone about 75 to 100 yards from the dock when they fell into the water and did not resurface.

Several people nearby raised concern, and the Wright County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team searched the lake before locating and recovering Cameron.

Cameron was pronounced dead despite urgent response efforts, leaving family members, friends, classmates, and neighbors facing a sudden and painful loss.

Those who knew Cameron remember a warm, positive young person whose kindness and presence made a lasting difference in everyday moments.

The Mertens family has received prayers, condolences, and support as the community honors Cameron’s memory.

Memorial and funeral service details will be announced later by family members.
